Musing on Books

In Istanbul, last fall, I visited the 1000 years of Koran exhibit that happened to be featured at the archealogical museum during my stay. Many of these books were exhibited open, their letters and words incomprehensible to me.

How do they relate to the many 'books' I've made as an artist? Mine are not artists' books in the usual sense. They don't partake of the three dimensional book form, two covers binding numbers of pages. Rather, they resemble something along the lines of what a book looks like when it's opened. The two adjacent pages are abstract and wordless. Elements resembling words - as in small shapes in lines, the marks that stand for letters - are incomprehensible to the viewer.
